Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

You may find yourself craving strange combinations of foods or foods that you didn’t even care for before you were pregnant. Though most foods are safe to eat, there are some foods that should be avoided during pregnancy, and the list of foods that are off-limits may be surprising.

Many of these foods are foods that you may have eaten regularly pre-pregnancy with no problem. However, during pregnancy the bacteria or parasites found in these foods can be extremely dangerous to your baby.

Three Common Foodborne Bacteria and Parasites

Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause complications during pregnancy. It is found in contaminated water and soil and can survive on unwashed vegetables. Animals can also be carriers of this bacteria. Avoid any uncooked/undercooked meat (less than 160 degrees Farenheit) and be sure to wash all vegetables thoroughly.

Taxoplasmosis is caused by a single-celled parasite that can be extremely harmful to your baby. This parasite can be contracted by eating undercooked meat or by touching your hands to your mouth after contact with undercooked meat.

Salmonella is a bacteria carried by some animals and can be transmitted to humans through undercooked meat and raw eggs. Most salmonella bacteria found in animal products can be killed by thorough cooking. Poached eggs and eggs that are sunny side up may still carry bacteria and should not be consumed during pregnancy.
